On Saturday, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak convened government ministers, medical professionals, and managers of the health system in 10 Downing Street for discussions to resolve the healthcare crisis that has left thousands of patients waiting outside of overcrowded hospitals. To share knowledge and workable solutions, the government claimed to be “bringing together the best minds from the health and care sectors.” The National Health Service, funded by the government, has long-standing issues, which the opposition Labour Party dismissed as “a talking shop,” and experts cautioned there are no quick fixes.
After pandemic restrictions were relaxed, the demand for care increased. Flu and other winter viruses also increased after two lockdown years. After Brexit, staff shortages resulted from pandemic burnout and a lack of European workers in the U.K.. Thousands of hospital beds are occupied by patients who are medically fit for discharge but need somewhere to go due to a lack of long-term care facilities. Only a third of the hospital patients in England who were ready to be discharged last week, according to official statistics, actually did so.
