Jacinda Ardern’s abrupt resignation last week has raised new concerns about Justin Trudeau’s position as prime minister, another liberal leader with celebrity-like status whose support has dwindled recently. The shocking news comes as polls suggest her Labour Party would have a difficult time winning re-election on October 14.

“Ms. Ardern cried up while she explained how these years in the position had taken a toll.”

Ms. Ardern, 42, claimed that during the summer break she had given some thought to her future in order to find the passion and vigour to continue in the position. She told reporters, “But regrettably I haven’t, and I would be doing New Zealand a dis-service to continue.”

Associate professor of politics and international relations at the University of Auckland, Jennifer Lees-Marshment, told NPR that she was taken aback by Ardern’s abrupt departure.

“I did not expect it to happen because it is uncommon for politicians to be that savvy and selfish.”
