As protests over China’s draconian COVID-19 restrictions persisted into the 3rd day and extended to many other cities, hundreds of protesters and police engaged in violent altercations in Shanghai.

After 10 people died in a fire in Urumqi, the capital of the far-western province of Xinjiang, which many of the demonstrators blame on extended COVID-19 lockdowns, the most recent demonstrations unprecedented in mainland China since President Xi Jinping took office a decade ago.
