After having to withdraw from her second-round match at the ASB Classic in Auckland due to an ankle injury, Emma Raducanu criticized the “slippery” courts. With the score 6-0 5-7 in the second set against Slovakia’s Viktoria Kuzmova, the Briton exited the court in tears after twisting her ankle. The Australian Open will start in Melbourne in only 11 days.
Since the courts are so slick, it’s not surprising that this happened to someone, said Raducanu. The top-ranked British player, who didn’t lose a game in the opening set, said on the Stuff website in New Zealand: “It’s hard to take. I’ve been feeling happy and optimistic lately because I’ve been putting in a lot of physical activity. So it’s extremely disheartening to be halted by a rare accident, like rolling an ankle.
